Penyiscola History,
the city on the sea [go
up]
What today is a quiet and ideal village to spend
our holidays was, in a long time ago, a crossroads
of cultures and civilizations. Greeks, Carthaginians,
Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Phoenicians, settled
their strategic position there for taking control
of the Mediterranean Sea and because of the security
of the walls, leaving their mark in traditions
that nowadays still alive.
One of the most characteristic monuments in Penyiscola
is the castle, located in the highest part of
the rock, with a height of 0.04 miles on the
sea level, and drawing a difficult orography.
Although it was created by the Templar Order
in S. XIII, the Montesians modified it later.
But it would not be until years later, in 1411,
when an exiled Pope would take it as his refuge,
turning to the castle into palace and giving
an important reputation to the city. This Pope
would be known like the Papa Luna (Moon Pope).
Nowadays, the castle has been declared National
Monument and is an important tourist and cultural
attraction centre. After Alhambra in Granada,
this is the second monument more visited in Spain. |

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE
Having a few days in Penyiscola is obligated go for
a stroll by the old town area, visiting the Iglesia
del Socorro and the Mare de Déu de la Ermitaña,
the Papa Luna’s Castle with its gardens and
walls. Know by yourself the reason because it is
known like the Bufador to a natural tunnel on the
rock where the city is based, and by which the Mediterranean
waters enter and leave continuously, increasing the
resonance of the marine waves in the stormy days.
Near from the Bufador it’s located the Museum
of the Sea, in the high part of the rock, dedicated
to the conservation, diffusion and safeguard of the
marine Penyiscola cultural patrimony.
You can go for a walk by foot, or by bicycle, too,
along the Paseo Papa Luna, way which unites Penyíscola
with Benicarló in a same avenue with views
during all the route to the beach and the castle.
If you’re looking for a trip around the country,
we recommended you a visit to the Sierra de Hirta,
a natural place in the South coast where is possible
to access crossing the old footpaths rehabilitated
recently. In addition to the diving, there are many
other activities that can be practiced in the Sierra
area, like walkings by anyone of the routes marked
in 4x4, quad, moto, on by foot, bicycle or by horse.
If besides to be in contact with the nature you want
to see virgin places, oughtn’t go away from
here without spending a day in the Illes Columbretes.
To go to there you can get a boat from the Penyíscola
port, which goes out a day to week.
To approximately 45 minutes by the highway, you will
find the Cuevas de San José. In the Vall d'Uixó there’s
the more lenght and navigable underground river of
Europe, with a length of 2,750 ms, of which 800 can
be sailed in a tourist route. We advise you to pay
attention to the guide indications about the cave
wonders. Following the highway, you will arrive to
the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias de Valencia.
It’s a good place to have a nice day with family
or your fellow travellers. Finally, it’s sure
you will thank for an afternoon to the Font de Segures
spa, in Benasal, a beautiful place well known for
the properties of their medicinal waters.

1 to 100 years, but maybe the little kings of the
house have a good time in the Jardín del Papagallo,
in the aquatic park Acualandia or in Port Adventure,
to only 100 km of Penyiscola.

to spend a time with friends going to the cinema,
playing a skittles party, or shopping. You also can
