Penyiscola History, the city on the sea [go up]
What today is a quiet and ideal village to spend our holidays was, in a long time ago, a crossroads of cultures and civilizations. Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs and Phoenicians, settled their strategic position there for taking control of the Mediterranean Sea and because of the security of the walls, leaving their mark in traditions that nowadays still alive.
One of the most characteristic monuments in Penyiscola is the castle, located in the highest part of the rock, with a height of 0.04 miles on the sea level, and drawing a difficult orography. Although it was created by the Templar Order in S. XIII, the Montesians modified it later. But it would not be until years later, in 1411, when an exiled Pope would take it as his refuge, turning to the castle into palace and giving an important reputation to the city. This Pope would be known like the Papa Luna (Moon Pope). Nowadays, the castle has been declared National Monument and is an important tourist and cultural attraction centre. After Alhambra in Granada, this is the second monument more visited in Spain.

Having a few days in Penyiscola is obligated go for a stroll by the old town area, visiting the Iglesia del Socorro and the Mare de Déu de la Ermitaña, the Papa Luna’s Castle with its gardens and walls. Know by yourself the reason because it is known like the Bufador to a natural tunnel on the rock where the city is based, and by which the Mediterranean waters enter and leave continuously, increasing the resonance of the marine waves in the stormy days. Near from the Bufador it’s located the Museum of the Sea, in the high part of the rock, dedicated to the conservation, diffusion and safeguard of the marine Penyiscola cultural patrimony.
